7th and 8th Grade Art

We hit the ground running in the Middle School Art program this year.  I have one class of all returning students and one class of mixed new and returning students. The new students quickly began stepping up to the rhythm and attention we give to each new process and their work is on track. We began the year with a oil pastel abstract design framed by a black and white designed border. This project is a gentle entry into the art program, allows for a creative exploration and individual expression. The work is hanging throughout the second floor of the school. Following the expressive work, we collaborated with the Language Arts program to create a graphic arts poster following the "All about me" recipe. Students were given a rubric to follow including instructions on borders, headings, type font usage, how to center and design principles. I am hoping the lessons learned through this process will help with the visual presentation of all their future poster work! Following the recipe project, we began work in the Maker Space. I do not usually begin the year using power tools, but this group of Middle School students seem to be listening well and able to follow clear instructions. All the students have begun using the power tools and are building a simple candy dispenser. More information will be shared on this project next week.
