Elementary I (1st, 2nd and 3rd Grade)

We have completed so many projects already this year, the students are working very diligently on their work. We began the year with an all time favorite project of "taking a line for a walk."  This is a great project to introduce the students to new materials, the placement of the art materials in the classroom and it gets some art up in the school quickly! The work is hanging in the 2nd floor by their classrooms. The following project was a series of observational drawings in the Learning Garden. We looked at the parts of a flower, then used observational skills to draw the flowers from life. The students then added color to their work using a variety of materials. I noticed that the majority of students enjoyed mixing colors for their flowers, but it was definitely more trial and error than purposeful color mixing. I presented a lesson on color mixing and the foundations of the color wheel. The students learned the language of primary, secondary and tertiary colors and had to try and create a correct color wheel using the three primary colors. They did a fantastic job on a complicated process. I presented tints as well and several students were successful in creating an even gradient on the side of their color wheel.
