Children's House (Kindergarten)
We have had an incredibly productive beginning of the year in art. We have a full class of 18 students in the Kindergarten class and they all love art! We begin each class on the rug and I present the lesson for the day. We have been completing one project a day for each class as the students are well focused and excited about the art process. We began the year with a watercolor painting project. This allows me to access what level the students are in regards to material use, following simple instructions and fine motor skills. The work is hanging by their classrooms in the first floor. The following project was a simple line work using a variety of materials. The students could "take the line for a walk" using care to fill up their page beautifully and with intention. Just getting students to be aware of the placement of their designs and creating with intent is one of the goals of this work. We also work a lot with abstraction and the exploration of new materials. We looked at the work of Georgia O'Keefe for our third class and talked about how to take a small object and make it powerful. I wanted to see how the scissor skills were with each student, so we created a collage flower for this project. The next class was unfortunately on picture day, so that meant no paint or messy materials! We looked at the work of James Audubon and talked about the parts of a bird. The students had several examples of native Ohio birds to look at and tried to draw like a scientist using observational skills. The birds were colored realistically with colored pencil. I love teaching this age student and am so excited to have a full year ahead of me with this wonderful group.
